JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the resource and performance management of a team of software engineers within the Kroll Background Services business located primarily in the Nashville, TN office. This includes management over the design and development of new software products and existing product enhancements, based on specifications detailed by the product management organization. High-level analysis of product design and quality is required. This position is accountable for decisions and consequences at the team level. The Manager of Software Engineering is responsible for project goal setting, personnel management, expense management/forecasting, and representing and supporting corporate initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential Function: Performance Management
Desired Result:

* Support overall business goals by providing a link between the work of each individual and the overall mission of the engineering department.
* Regularly meet with all direct reports to ensure needs are addressed in a timely fashion.
* Actively coach and mentor team members. Prepare timely, detailed, and accurate performance appraisals of development engineering staff.
* Use HR guidelines and performance review scores to accurately determine salary adjustments.


Essential Function: Resource Management
Desired Result:

* Work with Product Marketing and Engineering Management to ensure all project needs are being met with the appropriate level of attention.
* Coordinate with other departments to ensure balanced, parallel effort.
* Produce schedules and specifications based on research, market/business need, Product Management driven requirements, and other information.
* Provide guidance to team members when faced with design issues.
* Recognize schedule slips, communicate with all affected departments, and produce new plans/schedules.
* Correctly interpret project requests to produce desired end results.
* Ensure that all work related to a project will provide the desired result. Communicate any project aspects that deviate from departmental goals.
* Perform necessary research to obtain background knowledge from industry, departments or clients.
* Accurately estimate Engineering hours, personnel/space/equipment needs, and starting/ending dates. Collaborate with senior management on strategy and schedules up to 12-24 month outlooks.
* Provide personal weekly "highlights" that communicate the status of all individual efforts. The report should provide project status, time spent working on various tasks, and what those tasks entailed.

* Code is sufficiently unit tested before delivery to test
* Productive relationship maintained between development and test teams.


Essential Function: Department Relations
Desired Result:

* Hold weekly project status meetings with team members and communicate project status on a weekly basis.
* Participate in communications as appropriate and through a variety of channels including written and oral communications to executives, peers, staff, and clients.
* Serve as a primary contact with customers/clients both technical and non-technical.
* Comfortable use of various communication including face to face, voice, email, Internet, and fax. Communicate in an effective manner that promotes healthy inter-departmental relationships.
* Project professional image when at work and traveling according to company policy.


Essential Function: Department Compliance
Desired Result:

* Endorse and motivate team to support and ensure the Kroll Background Screening Software Development methodology is followed.
* Must have a demonstrated ability to document and present in both written and presentation form any operations of the engineering team and areas of product responsibility.
* Protect Kroll Background Screening's technical edge by securing information, practicing need-to-know, and maintaining company privacy.






Qualifications
CANDIDATE EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

· Bachelor's degree or equivalent and five years of software development experience; or five to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
· Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
· Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
· Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
· Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
· Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.
· Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
· Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced statistical theory.
· Make sound business decisions that impact resources and schedules.
· Ability to recognize and mitigate risks as it pertains to project management.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position will require that an individual be able to work alone or in a group environment. The position may also require that the candidate be capable of moving PC's or other similar peripheral computing equipment as needed.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Some business travel is required approximately 10 to 15 %.
