Description
Major Responsibilities:
Monsanto Soy Breeding Information team seeks a highly motivated statistical geneticist with background and interest in statistical data analysis, experimental design related to plant breeding and genetics. In this position, the successful candidate will be involved in large scale genotypic and phenotypic data and pedigree analysis to support Monsanto's global Soy discovery breeding effort. The selected candidate will be able to:
* Analyze phenotypic and genotypic data utilizing the latest statistical applications. This will involve mining existing data as well as analyzing and interpreting phenotypic and molecular data from new experiments.
* Provide solid interpretation and recommendations based on quantitative data analysis to drive improvements to the existing breeding practices.
* Provide written and oral presentations of methods, results, conclusions, and recommendations to peer and management groups.
* Design novel experiments and develop suitable statistical programs to support discovery breeding activities.
* Give presentations of the results and interpretations from the various statistical analyses.
* Work across teams and functions to maximize the impact of this role on discovery breeding research.
The successful candidate will work in a cross-functional matrix environment, interacting with members of Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Information Technology, and Breeding organizations.
The position will be located at Monsanto's High-throughput Genotyping Center in Ankeny, Iowa.
Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience:
* Ph.D. in animal/plant breeding, genetics, or equivalent with strong statistical/biometrical or quantitative genetic background.
* Proficient knowledge of quantitative genetics theory and experimental design as applied to plant breeding with a Post Doc or similar experience.
* Excellent quantitative skills including experience in the use of commercial statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, ASREML, SQL etc. or custom programs for the design and analysis of experiments.
* Experience working with large databases is required.
* Previous experience with mixed-model methods for genetic evaluation and experience in marker-assisted selection and molecular breeding is a plus.
* The ability to supervise and mentor others.
