Description
Major Responsibilities (essential job functions, scope of the job etc.):
The Mystic Plant Growth Resource Management team has an immediate opening for a Research Associate position. The focus of this team is production of plant and seed material in support of Monsanto's transgenic corn pipeline. The successful candidate will have prior training and experience in plant science and greenhouse settings. Candidate will also possess strong interpersonal and time management skills. Some holiday and weekend hours are a requirement.
Responsibilities:
* Greenhouse Operations: Be fully trained in and actively participate in day to day greenhouse operations including but not limited to planting, nutrient management, pollination, pest management, harvest, seed processing and handling, data collection and entry, soil and pot preparation and regulated plant material waste disposal. May be responsible for coordination / oversight of one or more of these operations.
* Plant Quality:
o Define quantitative and qualitative methods for characterizing, monitoring and improving plant quality in greenhouses and chambers, including biological and environmental factors.
o Collaborate with team members in an effective and positive manner to design, execute and summarize experiments in support of improvement efforts. Be able to summarize and use data to make decisions.
o Validate new procedures for implementation. Ensure training and update of appropriate documents; monitor procedures post-implementation.
Qualifications
Qualifications/Competencies:
* BS (2 plus years),or MS degree in horticulture, biology, plant science or related field plus minimum 2 years experience with growth of crops in controlled environments.
* Experience with greenhouse operations, including a working knowledge of environmental control systems and pest management Proficiency with MS Office applications, specifically Word and Excel; will need to learn and use proprietary databases for data tracking
* Experience that demonstrates accuracy and attention to detail
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to adjust to changes in priority
* Demonstrated ability to work successfully both independently and as part of a team
* Physical requirements include working in hot environments, exposure to potential allergens including plant pollen, and lifting up to 40lbs
