Description
Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant with the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary Soybean Breeding Research Team. The Field Research Assistant will assist in all phases of a comprehensive soybean breeding program aimed at germplasmn development and the introgression of new traits into elite cultivars.
The successful Field Research Assistant has the opportunity to participate in all operations related to field trials, seed preparation, seeding, field plot management, data collection, harvesting and trial plots. Responsibilities:
*
Manage all aspects of soybean breeding nursery program including crossing block set-up and execution, seed counting, planting, note-taking, field pollination, harvesting, threshing, seed sampling, data entry and winter nursery preparation and shipping.
*
Utilization of research equipment such as planters, combines and hand held computers for data collection.
* Assist in computer related activities and provide support for day-to-day nursery and crossing activities.
*
Participation in station ESH safety porgram including participation in monthly safety meetings, conducting safety inspections, and providing safety training and guidance to field personnel.
*
Recruiting, supervision and training of temporary employees.
*
Work closely with other research sites to keep program operating efficiently.
*
Participate with team to successfully maintain ISO Quality Management Standards.
*
Assist in other projects and perform other duties as and when required.
* Travel for training and other meetings is likely during the year.
Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience:
*
BS in Agronomy or related fields (or obtain by May 2010).
*
Ability to work extended hours during the peak planting, pollinating and harvest seasons.
*
Experience utilizing MS Word and MS Excel.
*
Emphasis on quality work and attention to detail.
*
Ability to work effectively with interdisiplinary teams.
*
Ability to initiate and supervise daily tasks as well as demonstarted ability to balance and prioritize tasks.
*
Abilility to communicate effectively, both written and oral
*
A commitment to maintaing a safe work environment.
Desired Skills/Experience:
*
Familiarity with breeding methodologies.
*
Broad knowledge of crop production and farming practices.
*
Ability to obtain a Class A CDL if necessary.
*
Ability to obtain a pesticide applicator license.
