Description


Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant with the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team within the Trait Integration organization on Oahu, HI. The Research Assistant will assist in all phases of a comprehensive trait integration and breeding program aimed at germplasm development and the introgression of new traits into elite cultivars.



The successful Research Assistant has the opportunity to manage all operations related to a conversion nursery, seed preparation, planting, field plot management, data collection, harvesting. Responsibilities:

* Manage different field operations, planting, management of plants, crossing, self-pollinating, data collection, harvest, etc.
*
Utilization of research equipment such as planters and hand held computers for note taking
*
Assist in computer related activities such as printing of field books, pollination and harvest tags and provide support for day-to-day conversion nursery activities such as operation of shelling systems, seed counters, and seed packaging
*
Shipping of nursery and hybrid testing materials
*
Perform safety inspections, and assist in providing safety training and guidance to field personnel.
*
Supervision and training of crew and temporary employees
*
Work closely with other research sites to keep program operating efficiently
*
Participate with team to successfully maintain the ISO Quality Management Standards
*
Assist in other projects and perform other duties as and when required.



Qualifications


Required Skills/Experience:

*
BS in Agronomy or related fields or a High School Degree/GED and 3+ years relevant agricultural research experience in a nursery or open field environment.
*
Experience utilizing MS Word and MS Excel.
*
Ability to work extended hours during the peak planting, pollinating and harvest season.
*
Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams
*
Demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize tasks
*
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral.
*
Ability to lift 40lbs

Desired Skills/Experience:

*
Familiarity with breeding methodologies is desired.
*
Supervisory experience.
*
Broad knowledge of crop production and farming practices as well as farm equipment operation.
