Job Description and Qualifications Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an immediate opening for an Instrument Technician. Incumbent will operate out of his/her residence in the Chicago area or from one of the major Air Products facilities, and have global responsibility.
Position Responsibilities:
Instrument Technicians have a very demanding position requiring strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently, and if necessary, also have the ability to lead a crew. Technicians are expected to respond to Operations requirements on a 24 hour per day, 7 day per week basis. Generally, Instrument Technicians average 60-65 hours per week and they travel away from home about 75% of the time. The facilities at which work is performed are located thorugh the United States and internationally. International travel outside of North America is expected to be low, but is possible.
The Instrument Technician supervises and/or performs the preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning of instrumentation and controls equipment in Global Operations facilities, joint ventures, subsidiaries, and third party facilities.
The Instrument Technician must be familiar with all equipment in plants served. A sampling of these devices include transmitters, switches, analyzers, programmable controllers, proximity devices, level control systems, control valves, equipment and personnel safety systems, paymeter systems, and others. Within each category are many varieties: pneumatic and electronic. The Technician is also responsible for troubleshooting and working with Instrument Engineering support to maintain distributed control systems. This is a most rapidly changing technical area and requires a high level of technical training. Supervisory skills are secondary to technical skills
The Instrument Technician will be required to assist Process and Project engineers with control improvements and the development of control upgrades. This includes hardware selection as well as the creation/modification of drawings.
The Technician will be responsible to maintain accurate job and calibration records within the SAP system. This includes the documentation of ISO tasks and corrective maintenance tasks, as well as the documentation of work performed on routine work orders.
Position Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years experience in instrument maintenance, with working knowledge of Programmable Electronic Systems (DCS, PLC), and the HMI's that support these. Networking skills are advantageous.
- Field experience with the service of pressure and delta-pressure transmitters, temperature instruments, flow metering instruments and control valves and accessories is required.
- Field experience on analytical equipment, including trace O2 and N2, gas chromatographs, and interest in UHP (ultra high purity) and other advanced units would be advantageous.
- Demonstrated supervisory skills and safe work skills.
- Strong basic computer skills is a prerequisite.
- Must be a team player in a team environment.
- Self starter and self motivator.
- Ability to work extended hours and to travel with short notice.
- Ability to work in an industrial environment to include lifting, climbing, etc., and at heights and in confined spaces.
This is a ladder position and advancement is possible based on experience and demonstrated competency.
