Job Description and Qualifications Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an immediate opening for a CONTROLLER - INCOME TAX ACCOUNTING at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
This position has overall responsibility to ensure that taxes are properly accounted for and reported in the Company’s SEC filings and that the proper SOX internal controls and supporting documentation are in place and exercised globally by the Company with respect to the reporting of taxes. This position will need to work closely with the members of the Tax department, Technical Accounting department and Controllers of foreign locations to determine if taxes are reported accurately and that SOX compliance controls have been satisfied.
Three senior income tax accountants report into this position.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Manage the tax accounting issues for all domestic and foreign locations to ensure compliance with FAS 109, FIN 48 and APB 23 related to:
• PROVISION FOR INCOME TAXES
o Review and coordinate the booking of the global effective tax rate during the fiscal year
o Review the month-by-month tax accounting provision for all domestic and foreign operating reporting locations and investigate any material differences
o Work directly with Tax department members, Technical Accounting department and operating controllers to ensure completeness and accuracy of the tax provisions at each domestic and foreign location in accordance with US GAAP
o Review accuracy and completeness of effective tax rate bookings for each domestic and foreign reporting location during the fiscal year
o Monitor and review accounting for provision true-up to return and “special” tax provision issues (i.e. purchase price accounting, equity accounting, valuation allowances, etc.) for each domestic and foreign reporting location.
• DEFERRED TAXES
o Manage the accounting for deferred taxes for all domestic and foreign operating locations
o Review and determine the accuracy and completeness of deferred taxes for all foreign locations in accordance with US GAAP
o Review recoverability of deferred tax assets
o Review and monitor balance sheet classification changes each quarter to determine impact on current and deferred tax classifications
• Uncertain Tax Positions
o Manage the accounting for uncertain tax positions for all domestic and foreign operating locations
o Ensure that the recognition, de-recognition and measurement of uncertain tax positions is in accordance with US GAAP
o Maintain documentation of uncertain tax positions.
• SEC FILINGS
o Review accuracy and completeness of tax provision and tax balance sheet classifications on all SEC filings for the Company
o Determine accuracy and completeness of all tax footnote disclosures for 10Q/K and Annual Report.
• SARBANES OXLEY COMPLIANCE
o Ensure that key controls are being exercised by the Tax Dept and other foreign locations where taxes are accounted
o Determine that up-to-date documentation of SOX processes are being completed by the Tax Dept and other foreign locations
o Assess impact of any control failures.
• OTHER
o Obtain training and maintain expertise on FAS 109 and FIN 48 accounting principles
o Develop quarterly communication flow between Technical Accounting and Tax departments to determine new business, accounting or balance sheet classification issues that may have tax impacts
o Support/educate foreign locations in tax accounting under US GAAP principles
o Work closely with the Tax department and the Technical Accounting (US, Europe and Asia) on specific tax issues
o International travel expected especially in the first year.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Senior manager in the tax department of a Big 4 Accounting firm or comparable industry experience
• Experienced in FAS 109, FIN 48 and APB 23
• Strong knowledge in the preparation of Financial Statements
• Strong tax knowledge base
• International tax accounting experience preferred
• Experience with SAP software a plus
• CPA preferred.
