Job Description and Qualifications Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an immediate opening for a Manufacturing Safety Specialist at its Wilkes-Barre, PA facility. This position reports to the Plant Manager. It requires technical EH&S knowledge and employee relation skills.
Under general supervision, the Manufacturing Safety Specialist coordinates the environmental, health, and safety activities for the facility. This position performs work involving the implementation of established environmental, health and safety programs and a variety of associated tasks.
Additional responsibilities:
- Implements, audits, and updates EH&S programs.
- Develops and implements procedures and programs to meet the specific safety needs of the Wilkes-Barre Plant.
- Ensures that Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) programs are in compliance with all corporate standards and regulatory requirements. Also prepares and maintains all forms/records as required to meet compliance requirements.
- Coordinates safety activities of managers and supervisors to ensure effective and consistent implementation of safety activities throughout the plant.
- Interacts with supervisors and shop personnel in order to identify and correct unsafe conditions or work practices.
- Identifies unsafe conditions and practices, recommending appropriate corrective action.
- Maintains contact with outside organizations such as corporate industrial hygienists, safety and health specialists, environmental professionals, fire departments and rescue teams in order to assure information exchange and mutual assistance.
- Participates in activities of related professional organizations to update knowledge of EH&S program developments.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of a 2 or 4 year degree program from an accredited college or university, and/or equivalent work experience
- 1-3 years of progressively Environmental, Health and Safety experience in a manufacturing environment
- Strong knowledge of EH&S principles, practices, regulations, and codes; including 29 CFR 1910, EPCRA 313 and RCRA compliance
- Ability to identify and recognize unsafe conditions or work practices
- Ability to develop and conduct effective training and education programs
- Ability to plan and organize work in order to achieve desired results
- Ability to be available (on-call) after normal working hours
- Ability to work independently and display creativity, exercise sound judgment, demonstrate initiative, and possess excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents
- Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints
- Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to senior management, elected officials and appointed department heads and employees
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions
- Strong knowledge of PC operations and software (Word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation material and instructional design) is required
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
